Turbulence

P!nk is my favorite artist. I’ve seen her in concert 5 times, most recently this past summer. And I have tickets to see her again this coming summer. She puts on an amazing show and her songs have such grit, heart, and soul.

When I heard her newest album, Trustfall, I loved every song, but one song really resonated with me, “Turbulence.” Even during the first listen, I began to cry. It hit so hard. It compares anxiety/anxiety attacks/panic attacks to turbulence. It can be difficult and painful and awful and rocky, but each instance is only temporary. “As scary as it gets, It’s just turbulence.”

Every single lyric just fits my current life situation so perfectly. While it reflects my own feelings when experiencing anxiety, it applies even more to helping my kids through theirs. “The panic is temporary, but I’ll be permanent” and “I’ll find a place to land, Where you’re safe, never break, Where the morning never ends, When you say that you can’t, I will watch you dance through this turbulence” all points to helping someone else through the storm that is anxiety.

I will be their center. I will be their constant. I will be there for them, always. No matter what.

Here are the full lyrics to this amazing song. And below them is a link to the video in case you’re interested in hearing what the song sounds like.

You and I
Happy ending and a tragedy combined
But we both can’t live without it and we tried
We should take our own advice

Mmm, don’t give up
There’s a mountain in the middle of the road
It’ll take a little longer to get home
Baby, all we’ve got is time

You can’t help when your stomach sinks, see your life happen in a flash
In your head it could be so real that you almost feel the crash
The panic is temporary, but I’ll be permanent
So when it hits, don’t forget as scary as it gets
It’s just turbulence

Close your eyes
Pretend you’re driving on a bumpy road at night
You can meet me in the corners of your mind
We can build a new cloud nine

Aye, if you’re alive
Then it means that you’re committed to survive
That’s enough to drain the life from you sometimes
But I hold on tight

Hold my hand, hold your breath
And I’ll find a place to land
Where you’re safe, never break
Where the morning never ends
When you say that you can’t
I will watch you dance through this turbulence
It’s turbulence

  1. There are some artists that just speak to us and the events happening in our lives. I did listen to the song and I can see that it presents a powerful message in that whatever we are going through is just temporary even though it might not seem so at the time. Hand in there.

  2. A powerful connection to an artist, whose powerful connection of anxiety/panic attacks to turbulence would (and surely does) resonate with many. I became familiar with Pink some years ago when my youngest son, then a senior in high school, was asked by a teacher to play the “clean” version of “(You’re) Perfect” — she was singing it for awards day and couldn’t find an accompaniment track. Few people even knew my boy could play the piano. He learned the song by ear, played it for her, sang harmony, and brought the whole house down. My hands were shaking so badly I didn’t think my phone video would be watchable (it was). This is one of my life’s most memorable moments and I must hand it to Pink – the lyrics are mighty.
